How To Play Video Poker Online
Video poker does come with its challenges. It’s not as simple as slots, so far as there’s strategy to learn (where as slots are just a matter of spinning the reels!). The way the game plays is pretty simple, you’re dealt 5 cars to begin. You then decide which cards you want to keep by tapping the pictures of the cards you want to hold on to. You then press “draw” to have the hands you didn’t hold onto re-drawn from the deck. You win when you end up with poker hands such as two pair, a flush, straight or set (We’ll explain these in a bit).
When you look at a paytable in video poker you will usually see 5 columns which show your winnings depending on the number of coins you bet. Note that often there is a bonus for a royal flush in the “5 coin” column, which means you should always play with 5 coins when possible to maximise your chances of winning. If you can’t afford 5 coins on the machine you are playing, then we recommend you move to a lower denomination machine to ensure you’re not being penalised for playing less than the maximum number of coins.
When playing the optimal video poker strategy, you can usually reduce the house edge of the game to less than 1%. This is one of the best odds you will get anywhere in a casino, either online or in a brick and mortar one, and much better than the odds on most slot games. When choosing a video poker game to play, check all of the pay tables, and choose the one with the best pay table. For example a “Jacks or better” game, with 1 coin for jacks or better, 2 coins for two pair, 3 for 3 of a kind, 4 for a straight, 6 for a flush, 9 for a full house, 25 for 4 of a kind, 50 for a straight flush and 250 for a royal flush will on average pay out 99.54%. If a full house pays 8 coins, and a flush pays only 5 coins, then the average pay out is 97.29%, meaning you will lose your money 6 times faster playing the machine paying out less coins. So check the pay tables!
Video Poker Hands
The hands you can get when playing video poker are all illustrated in the table below. They are the same as for most other kinds of poker.
Royal flush – this is a straight flush where your highest card is an ace.
Straight flush – this is 5 cards running one after the other, where all the cards are the same suit.
Four of a kind – this is when you have 4 of one card, in various suits.
Full house – this is when you have 3 of one card, and 2 of another. So both a pair and three of a kind.
Flush – this is when you have 5 cards which are all the same suit
Straight – this is when you have 5 running cards, of various suits
Three of a kind – this is when you have three of the same card, of various suits.
Two pair – this is when you have two different pairs
Pair – This is when you have two cards that are the same.
High card – this is when you do not make any of the above hands, at which point the highest card you have is your hand. Ace is highest, 2 is lowest.
Usually when playing video poker, you will not get paid for anything less than 2 pair or some high single pairs. This varies a lot from game to game, so make sure to check a game’s pay table before playing for this reason too – to ensure that you’re not trying to get hands which won’t win you any money!
